After-Mass surprise: A 1975 gold-mint Krugerrand coin for the Canadian missions.

A Sunday in July 2010 found me preaching about Catholic Missions In Canada at a parish in Etobicoke. It is a practice to meet the people at the end of Mass and speak to those who have some reaction to the news about missions that I had just shared.

One gentleman came up to me after one of the Masses and pressed a little plastic wallet into my hand. He said he was from South Africa, and he wanted the contents to help the Canadian missions. He explained briefly that it was a 1975 gold-mint Krugerrand coin, and declined to give his name, since he didn’t need a receipt. Before disappearing, he mentioned quickly, “By the way, it’s worth at least a thousand dollars.” Well, that was a surprise, and from someone who wishes to remain anonymous.

On the Monday morning, I checked the Internet listings for that particular coin, and indeed it was worth $1274.00. We give thanks that the Lord provides these unusual ways to help us assist our missions all across Canada
