CMIC Magazine wins 3 awards for excellence

Catholic Missions in Canada Magazine won three awards in the recently concluded Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada Conference in New Orleans June 4.

The magazine won first place for best cover (four-colour, small) as well as two second place awards for best photo story and best illustration with art work or photo.

The winning cover, “Solitude and prayer at Codroy Valley hermitage,” with photo by photographer-writer Nick O’Keeffe and designed by Kyle Schruder, appeared in the Summer 2009 issue of the magazine. In their review, the judges commented: “The cover has a fantastic and beautiful photo that evokes the solitude mentioned in the cover story. Great choice for a cover photo.”

“A Missionary in 20 Takes” by Father Bertrand Mathieu, O.M.I., with graphic designer Kyle Schruder and editor Patria Rivera, won second place for best photo story. The judges said the “deceptively simple and inviting layout of snapshots from a span of 37 years tells a rich story of one man’s missionary service under very challenging circumstances. The variety of amateur images, combined with the personal descriptions, are a window into another time and place.”

Another second place was won by the magazine for best illustration with art work or photo with the photo spread, “Trust in God,” by photographer Mary Maruschak and designer Kyle Schruder. The judges said designer “has skillfully integrated the main photo in the two-page spread to produce a balanced and striking layout.”

More than 600 member-publications and organizations reaching 26 million people competed for the awards which are held yearly by the Catholic Press Association (CPA). To access the CPA site, please go to: http://www.catholicpress.org/resource/resmgr/2010_magazine_winners.pdf
