Mission Modules - A Letter to Superintendent and Teachers

We are pleased to present Teaching Modules for both Elementary and Secondary Schools that teach our children about Catholic missionaries working throughout Canada.  These are our unsung heroes and heroines of the faith, who give up the comforts of home and family to travel to remote and isolated areas of our country, where climate and geography can make life harsh.  The joy of spreading the Good News of our Lord, Jesus Christ, however, uplifts the faithful hearts of our missionaries!

Since 1908, the mission of Catholic Missions In Canada has been to foster and extend the blessings of the Catholic faith throughout the dioceses of Canada which cannot economically support their local church and its ministry.  One hundred years after our founding, we continue our work, supporting missionaries in 26 mission dioceses across Canada.  We support:

  • Canadian Missionaries, including priests, deacons, sisters, brothers and lay ministers. We provide them with food for their table, heat for their trailer and fuel for their car or snowmobile.

  • Religious Education programs for Children and Youth in our mission dioceses to enrich their faith and their lives.

  • First Nations Ministry programs that offer hope to communities often beset by poverty, inadequate housing, family breakdown and substance abuse.

  • Building and Repair of Church Buildings and Rectories to renovate older buildings or to build new ones to serve the needs of the Catholic community.

  • Education and Formation of Lay People in roles of leadership within the Church, allowing them to lead the community in the absence of a priest in the celebration of our Catholic faith.

  • Education and Formation of Seminarians for our mission dioceses, allowing them to study and discern their call to the priesthood.

The Elementary School Teaching Modules available through the links below, contain lesson plans for a one-week period, originally developed by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board for Catholic Missions In Canada. We suggest starting the week, with showing our 30 minute DVD, Catholic Missions In Canada: Celebrating 100 Years of Mission, Lesson One and Monday Prayer Service, followed by four additional daily lesson plans and prayer services.  Each day will make the children aware of the needs and issues that exist in mission communities across Canada.  A new module replaces Lesson 5 to include materials on the Life of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha who is scheduled to be canonized on October 21, 2012. By next year, a fully revised curriculum for the Elementary School level will be made available in this section.

A set of new and completely revised High School Teaching Modules is also available through the links below.  Our grateful thanks go out to the author and writer, Laura Mackinnon, M.A., a former religious education teacher for the Toronto Catholic School Board and vice principal for the Calgary Catholic School Board, and to the editor, Dr. Christine Mader, a Canadian theologian, educator, and consultant, with a doctorate in theology from the University of Toronto.
