An evening to remember

TASTES OF HEAVEN 2009

Guest speaker Bishop Gary Gordon of Whitehorse shares stories from his mission diocese at the Tastes of Heaven dinner at Sala Caboto in Toronto

Thanks are in order for the many efforts to make this year’s Tastes of Heaven event the best one yet.

From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with open arms and made to feel very special.

Sala Caboto was beautifully decorated and put us in the mood. The silent auction items were so in keeping with the missionary theme. Host Celeste Iacobelli was a great emcee, keeping things moving along and on time.

Guest speaker Bishop Gary Gordon’s enthusiasm was so contagious and his “winter season” movie was very telling of missionary life in the Diocese of Whitehorse in the Yukon and northern British Columbia.

Culinary director Biagio Vinci outdid himself with the wonderful meal. After eight years, he can still surprise us with a uniquely different menu.

Father Bernard Mathieu, O.M.I., was a very worthy winner of the St. Joseph Award. Even though we couldn’t meet him in person, we felt we knew him from all the pictures and telling words of former Prime Minister Mr. John Turner and Oblate Bishop Vincent Cadieux of Moosonee and Hearst.

Then, the wonderful singers helped us to draw a great evening to a fitting close. It was truly an evening to remember.

Retired missionaries Deacon Billand Molly Callaghan have served in the Diocese of Prince George in British Columbia and in the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas in Manitoba.
