‘Your help is very important for this mission’

Notes from the missions

‘Your help is very important for this mission. The community in St. Peter's parish, St. Paul's River in the Lower North Shore in Quebec, live in an isolated area which can be arrived at only by ferry and air. During the winter months, the ferry doesn’t operate. So, air travel is the only option but air travel is very expensive.’
—Bishop Jean Pierre-Blais, of the Diocese of Baie-Comeau

‘We have done extensive work on the repair and maintenance of the church over the years but, the building is 55 years old and needs more repairs around the tower and windows.’
—Msgr. Edwin Gale, pastor, Holy Redeemer parish, Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador

‘The yearly fixed and necessary costs to operate the parish are as follows: heating ($10,000), utilities ($6,500), household expenses ($7,000), car gas and maintenance ($6,000).

‘Weekly travel up and down the coast (100 to 150 km a week); travel outside the area: plane, ferry, road. Air travel in Labrador is expensive. Typical fares from Blanc Sablon to Wabush are in excess of $700 one way. Travel to Corner Brook, the seat of the diocese, requires a ferry trip of three hours or air fares in excess of $800 one way.’
—Father Hanh Tran, pastor, Our Lady of Labrador parish, West St. Modeste, South Labrador, Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador
